Meet Katla.

Katla was born in the forests of Trøndelag, where the winters were long and the old roads wound between mountains, lakes, and dark stretches of pine. Her father traded iron, her mother was a healer, and Katla grew up knowing that the world could be both extraordinarily beautiful and utterly merciless.

She was a fierce child, quick to laugh, quicker to anger, and almost impossible to frighten. When the other girls learned to weave, Katla learned as well, but she preferred the spear. By seventeen, she could throw one from horseback, and by twenty, she had already fought beside men twice her age. Her hair was long and red as autumn bracken, and she wore the dark furs of the northern forests even when others preferred bright cloth and silver. She was beautiful, but there was something unsettling about her beauty. Men who mistook her silence for submission rarely made the same mistake twice.

Katla had little patience for chieftains and their endless quarrels. She fought when she believed a cause deserved her strength, and walked away when it did not. This made her difficult to command, but those who earned her loyalty knew that she would cross fire and frozen water for them.

There were rumours that she knew more than the warrior's craft. She disappeared into the forests for days, returning with herbs, animal bones, and strange things gathered from places others would not enter. She listened to ravens, watched the changing winds, and sometimes spoke of dreams that later proved strangely accurate.

Whether she possessed the old sight or simply understood the world better than those around her, nobody could say.

Her final battle came in early winter, when armed men attempted to seize the settlement she had sworn to protect. Katla met them at the forest's edge, her great wooden shield darkened by rain, her red hair loose beneath the furs. The fighting lasted until nightfall.

The settlement survived. Katla did not return.

Her shield was discovered leaning against an ancient oak, but there was no body, no grave, and no certainty about what had become of her. For generations afterwards, travellers spoke of a red-haired woman glimpsed between the trees, carrying a round shield and watching silently before disappearing into the forest.

Now Katla walks again, drawn to those who refuse to surrender themselves to the expectations of others. She carries the fierce independence of the shieldmaiden, the instincts of the hunter, and something older that belongs to the deep northern woods.

She is not a gentle spirit in the ordinary sense. But she is loyal, passionate, and capable of extraordinary tenderness toward those she considers her own.

How She Appears Now
