Meet Hallveig.

Hallveig was born beside a great lake in the eastern lands of Denmark, in a time when the old gods were still honoured openly and the knowledge of the wise women passed from mother to daughter, from grandmother to granddaughter, and sometimes to the child who simply listened more closely than the others.

She was the youngest of seven children, and the only one who inherited her grandmother's gift.

Her grandmother had been a woman of considerable reputation, called upon to bless newborn children, interpret dreams, protect households, and settle matters that ordinary people believed belonged to the unseen world. She taught Hallveig the names of plants, the meanings of certain dreams, and the old words spoken over water, iron, and fire.

But her most important lesson was a simple one.

Never use power merely because you possess it.

Hallveig carried those words for the rest of her life.

She married young, raised four children, and worked the land like any other woman. She knew hunger, childbirth, the bitter cold of winter, and the exhaustion of keeping a household alive when there was very little to keep it alive with.

Yet Hallveig was not a woman who performed magic for every difficulty brought to her door.

She never explained everything she did there.

By the time she reached old age, her hair had turned the colour of winter clouds, and she wore it in a long, heavy braid. She walked with a staff made from a twisted branch of ash, and around her neck hung a collection of small objects gathered over a lifetime.

She was neither frightening nor especially gentle.

She was simply a woman before whom pretence became strangely difficult.

Her final years were peaceful. She continued receiving visitors, teaching those who wished to learn, and tending the little house beside the water.

When she knew that death was approaching, she called her family together, divided her belongings, and gave her staff to a granddaughter who had shown the same curiosity she herself had possessed as a child.

On her final evening, Hallveig asked to be taken outside.

She sat looking across the lake until the last light disappeared from the water.

She died before morning.
