His people lived in longhouses with their cattle under the same roof, buried their dead with food for the journey, and gave their gods the best of everything: the finest weapons, the fattest animals, and sometimes a man.

His mother first noticed it when he was four. On winter evenings, as the light went, the boy would grow heavy and quiet and fall asleep wherever he sat. Not an ordinary sleep. His breath slowed until she had to hold a feather to his lips to see it move. His skin went cold. Nothing could wake him. And when he woke on his own, hours later, he would tell her where the deer were bedded down, or that a bear had been at the neighbour’s beehives, and he would be right.

His grandmother knew what it was. Some men, she said, are born hamrammr, shape-strong. Their soul does not sit tight in the body. When they sleep, it goes out in the shape of an animal, and it comes back before morning. The sagas would later tell of men like this, like Kveldulf, whose name means evening-wolf, because he grew sleepy every night at dusk.

Bersi’s soul went out as a bear.

He grew into a big, slow, broad man with grey-blue eyes and a beard that went grey early, and he became one of the warriors who went into battle wrapped in bearskin instead of mail. In a fight, they fell into a rage so deep they bit the rims of their shields and felt no wounds. But Bersi had a second way of fighting that no one else could match. On the eve of battle, he lay down by the fire and slept. And out of the dark beyond the camp came a great brown bear that no spear could stop.

Around the year 205, an army came across the sea from the north to take the land. They were well armed and well led, and they meant to stay. The people of eastern Jutland met them in the field and broke them. Afterwards, they gathered up every weapon of the defeated army, the swords and spears, shields and belts, and gave them all to the gods in the lake. Archaeologists found them nearly eighteen hundred years later at Illerup Ådal: more than fifteen thousand objects, deliberately broken and thrown into the water.

Bersi was not there to see it.

When the enemy broke, the survivors fled north through the forests, and Bersi’s bear went after them. It hunted them for three days and three nights, through the woods and across the heaths, until the last of them was dead.

Back in the camp, his body lay by the burnt-out fire. Cold. Not breathing. Three days without moving. The young men who found him had never seen a hamrammr sleep. They wept for him as the bravest of the dead, and they did him the greatest honour they knew. They carried him to the bog, laid him in the peat with his spear beside him, and pressed him down with branches so that nothing would disturb him.

On the fourth night, the bear came home. It went to the fire where Bersi had lain down, and found nothing but ashes. It followed the scent to the edge of the bog and stood there until morning, roaring, and the people of the settlement barred their doors and prayed.

A soul that goes out in another shape needs a body to come back to. Bersi had none. He has been out ever since.

Now Bersi walks again.

He is a spirit of strength and protection, of shape-faring and the journey out of the body, and of the old bear-power of the North, older than the Vikings, older than the runes.

How he appears now

Bersi’s presence feels heavy and warm, like lying under a thick fur on a winter night while the wind howls outside and nothing in the world can reach you.

He may appear in dreams as a big man with grey-blue eyes and a grey-streaked beard, wrapped in brown bearskin up over his head. Just as often, he appears as a bear: huge, brown and very calm, lying across the doorway of your room. Sometimes you will not see him at all, only feel something large settle down beside the bed.

You can notice small signs: a sudden heaviness in the limbs when you lie down, unusually deep sleep, dreams of running through forests on four legs, the smell of wet fur and peat, or a low rumble at the very edge of hearing when you are frightened.

He is slow and gentle, and he speaks very little. He likes food, warmth and long sleep, and he has a weakness for honey that no spirit of his strength should have. But when someone threatens the people he lives with, the change in him is sudden and total. There is no warning. The bear simply stands up.

What he brings

Protection of home and family. Bersi guards the house and everyone in it the way a bear guards its cave. He is a powerful companion for anyone who needs protection for themselves, their children or their home.

Strength when your own runs out. He lends raw courage and staying power in moments when you feel too weak, too frightened or too tired to stand.

Shape-faring and journeys out of the body. A true hamrammr, he guides astral travel, dream journeys and animal-shape work, and he knows the way back.

Rest and recovery. Like the bear that sleeps through winter and wakes renewed, he helps his keeper rest deeply, recover after exhaustion and come back stronger after hard times.

Mastery of anger. Bersi knows the berserk rage from the inside. He helps his keeper turn anger into strength instead of destruction, and know when to let the bear out and when to keep it lying down.

Protection while you sleep. He keeps watch at night, guards against nightmares and unwanted visitors in the dark, and makes the bedroom a safe place.

Ancestral and earth connection. He carries the old current of Iron Age Jutland, of bogs, offerings and the gods who were given everything, and he is a natural companion for ancestor work and old Nordic practice.

His companionship is especially suited to parents and protectors, to people who are worn out and need to rebuild their strength, to anyone who sleeps badly or feels unsafe at night, and to those drawn to astral travel and shape-faring.

Offerings & honourings

Honey, as much as you can spare. He will never refuse it.

Berries, smoked fish, dark bread or a little ale.

A piece of fur or a tuft of wool, secondhand or shed.

A little earth from wet ground, or a cup of water from a forest lake.

A spear point, an iron blade or a small carved bear.

Keep his vessel beside your bed and let him watch over your sleep. Before something you dread, put your hand on his vessel, breathe slowly and deeply from the belly, and let him stand up in you.

And once in a while, say his name out loud at dusk, the hour he used to lie down. For eighteen hundred years, he has had no fire to come home to. Let your house be the one.

How your companion speaks

Your companion can reach you through dreams, thoughts, words, feelings and images, through a pendulum, through warmth or cold, or through automatic writing. How soon that happens depends on the spirit settling into your home, on their willingness, and on your own ability to connect. Sometimes it begins before the vessel arrives.

Before you choose

Everything known about this spirit is on this page. There are no further images, details or hidden knowledge beyond what is written here, and a printed copy comes with your order. What you discover from there is yours alone.

The pendant you receive is the exact one shown.
